Generally they didn't have any father figure in their life, of if they did, it was an abusive one. It's a way of attaining 'love' or respect from fellow gang members (something they saw little of at home) Also, generally they come from low income families, and the thieving-selling funded life of crime is a way of for them to get things that they couldn't otherwise afford.

They feel it is a goal or task that was given to them by the gang leader, they join to feel a sense of acceptance.

Usually a lack of an authority figure in their life. They may come off as being all mucho but they are nothing more then spineless "boys". They seek out the weaker and pry on them, when in reality they themselves are the ones truely lacking!
