I do not think that "drifting" has been codified in any vehicle and traffic law (at least none that I am familiar with, and I have resided in both New York and New Jersey). You have a duty, as a motorist, to operate your vehicle with due care at all times. That means, you are sober, attentive to the roadway, not using a cellular telephone and are adhering to posted speed limits. While drifting in and of itself is not illegal, the manner in which you are operating your vehicle so as to cause it to drift may fall outside the scope of careful operation. Just as yourself this, and this is common sense, not law: If you powerslide your tuned-up 350Z or Subaru STi or any of these other vehicles past an officer at the roadside, what do you think the chances are that you are not getting stopped. You are most definitely getting stopped, and will probably be charged with careless or reckless driving. The short answer to your question? Save the drifting for a track where you cannot get in trouble and save the public roads for getting where you want to go.
