The fact that you are the aggressor and are not defending yourself. In many jurisdictions you have a duty to retreat (usually with exceptions for your own property). Thus, if you could have run away, and don't, that is not self defense in those jurisdictions. Also, you can only use reasonable and proportional force to defend yourself. For example, if you use lethal force, you better be using against lethal force.
