we have a little heart to heart talk about the word atheist...not athiest as the questioner would have us believe. a is negative the is the supreme being and ist is the one who believes. I would be curious just which the he didnt believe in.

Be thankful he's not a religious nut. Oh and extend him the respect you would expect for your own beliefs.

I would respect his decision and understand that becoming an atheist isn't all that simple especially if you come from a religious background. The worst you could do is yell at him, it only inflames the situation and could break apart relationships. As hard as it will be for the religious your gonna have to accept his beliefs because theres really not much you can do to alter it. Not everyone remains atheist though, many become agnostic or revert back to their old faiths. Just keep your posture and your cool and tell him how you feel.
