• well come to think of it...in diesel engines, the air is compressed first in the piston to make it extremely hot to ignite the fuel injected later on....i was thinking, extract certain various molecules and mess around with them...

• I'm in a land-locked area too. But we could transport it the same as gasoline -- pipes or trucks (of course we'd have to make sure we didn't corrode THEM too, which is still the biggest obstacle here).

• That's a false premise acually. Water is a very scarse resource (unless you refer to salt water) but people think we have plenty of it because North america has an amazingly vast amount of water. There isn't 'plenty' though.

• I agree, methane is plentiful both underground and from decaying plant material. And yes I would rather be driving with a tank of methane than hydrogen. Yes, I would accept the shorter driving range for methane. It is doable now with modification to vehicles already on the road and additional storage tanks at gasoline stations.

• I certainly expect the federal standards for methane fuel would be low sulfur as is the new diesel standard. So you can be sure that smell is from an unregulated source. Perhaps the feds will address the sulfur content of Baked Beans too. It would also clean up all those pig farms which tend to offend the neighbors because the waste would be valuable only if moved into a methane collector as soon as possible. Did you hear about the Government paid study of methane produced from cows. Some clever acadamian managed to get $250k to confirm the volume of greenhouse gas emitted from cow farts. The study concluded that it was not significant and asked for another $250k to study the other end.
