Howdy, The way I see it, the advantage is that if you get tired, the other person can pedal. The disadvantage is that you are the other person. hhahaha Yak

I see them on the bike path all the time and most of the people are not having a good time. The advantage: Girls think they are romantic. The distavantages: The better rider usually rides in the front so they can steer and also pedal more. This results in the other rider (usually the girl) to ride staring at the guy's back. Hard to have a conversation when you are aligned front to back. She usually doesn't pedal much, making the guy pedal for both of them. They are hard to turn, and hard to stop. Good in as a romantic idea, but boring to ride.

The advantage is that you can pretend you are pulling your own weight, the disadvantage is that you are pulling more than your share : )
