  • Poke a small hole in a paper plate in look thru it. The reason it is bad to stare at an eclipse is because you don't squint. Usually when the sun is out the brightness will force you to squint so your eyes are protected. The plate forces you to squint therefore protects your eyes. Edit: Sorry, please make the whole about the size of a small pencil eraser.
  • Please use ALWAYS the very affordable foil that are sold at many places whenever a eclipse is around -- or all year long in optical and astronomy shops. Either as a ready-made paper-framed goggles, or as a piece of foil that you can use for photography. Stronger absorbing foil is available to put it on binoculars or small telescopes, or on telephoto lenses. Costs a few bucks, but is excellent to see what is going on during the eclipse... AND IS SAFE FOR YOUR EYES! Google for accidents during eclipses, you will find ample... http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/eclipse3_809_wg.html http://tafkac.org/science/solar_eclipse_blinding_references.html
