In some states, you cannot vote in primaries if you're registered as an independent. You'd have to check with your state's policies as to which primary you'd vote in if you were registered independent.

Mostly likely you will be awakened at 3am but a group of masked senior citzens demanding you choose a side. If you choose that path be prepared for them, be prepared.

I imagine it varies from state to state. In Texas you don't register a party preference so essentially everyone is an independent until they vote in a primary. At least in some states independents don't get to vote the the primaries.
