  • Silk is spun by silk worms. They make cocoons, enclosing themselves inside. The cocoon is plunged into hot water, killing the silk worm. Then the silk strand is removed from the cocoon by unraveling, combined with other silk strands and made into thread and fabric. Don't feel too bad for the worm because he doesn't live very long anyway. There are many kinds of silk. Some of the better known ones are Silk Satin Charmeuse, Silk Chiffon (transparent), Silk Habotai or China Silk, Crepe de Chine, to name a few (my favorites). You can make beautiful clothing from silk. Here are some sites with more information on silk: http://www.funwithsilk.com http://www.silkthings.com http://www.treenwaysilks.com
