How funny! We are starting our fall garded, and we are going to try something new. We are going to try Straw Bale Gardening. http://www.no-dig-vegetablegarden.com/straw-bale-gardening.html I am sure it would also work very well with herbs (outdoors)

Depending on type of herb, some require consistent moisture and nice fertile soil like, Chives, Basil and Spearmint. Other herbs grow their best (demand) free-draining (sandy/gritty/gravelly) not too fertile soil in hot full sun like: Lavender, Hyssopus officinalis, Saponaria, Nepeta sp. Bay, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary and Oregano...basically your Mediterranean herbs. Echinacea angustifolia/Narrow-leaf Purple Coneflower (A northern prairie native) is another one which prefers those conditions. Hope that helps a bit? Good luck :))

If you include mint, grow it in a separate pot. If you put it in the ground it will spread everywhere.
