A kick ass actor. See "My Own Private Idaho". He struck it big with "Stand by Me". Had ostensibly a huge career ahead of him and got a little to crazy with the drugs one night. Damn. Not to sound superficial but he had the best hair ever.

Darryl61, AngusDei, and Goodsilver are all correct. fame seems to cause such a profound change as to need drugs to cope as with so many young actors.

I read an article once on Joaquin Phoenix, and he talked about that night when his brother died. He absolutely HATES the media, and rightly so. Joaquin supposedly was there when his brother died, even called 911 (again, this is based on an article, so do not quote me on this), and the first thing that the reporters did was take a picture of River Phoenix as he he was when he died, and this is the picture you see if you look into it. Sad, really, if you as me. I mean, did the reporter REALLY need to take that picture? I also read somewhere that the Hollywood Lifestyle and the fame of it all really got to him as a young actor, as it does many others (Johnny Depp has admited that as well, hence why he lives in France and isn't seen around Hollywood much)...anyway, again, don't quote me on this, but this is just what I've heard. :)

i find this question stupid( no offense or anything)..and i hate the 2nd post.River shoudnt just be known as the guy who died at the age of 23 cause of drug overdose or the older brother of Joaquin Phoenix.We all know that he was more than that.If u want to know who he was,well guess what we have the internet now..read about him im pretty sure you will love him in secounds.:)

A talented, driven actor who lit up the screen with his presence.A real waste and a real shame. He had so much more to give. His next project, just before he died was the reporter in Interview with the vampire. Being a huge fan of the film, I do wonder what it would have been like with him in it. Died far too young, but these things happen I guess. At least his memory lives on.
