  • Not all the city states. Only Sparta had the custom of taking children from a young age and raising them under the state auspices. (The Nazis and communist state of Russia based their systems partly upon Sparta) However, Sparta was not an ideal state by any means. The other Greek states were highly critical of its ethos. And neither were ALL children raised by the state: only Spartan blood children. There were also the helots, the slaves of Spartans (probably other Greek peoples they had conquered), who were not granted any of the privilieges of those of Spartan blood. The main reason that Sparta had to create the military nation that it was, was because Spartans were few in number compared with the helots. They were constantly afraid of being overthrown, unless they kept the helots on a short leash. So, no, it would not be a good idea.
