When learning, common injuries are a bruised bum and sprained (or broken) wrists. These occur when falling heelwise (or backwards) and toewise (forwards) respectively.

I would recommend wrist protectors, which are steel shafts embedded into a glove of some sort, preferably on the inside and outside of the wrist. These are also used in roller blading.

There are some hilarious pieces of equipment to protect your bum, for example the 'Arzpad', but I can't comment on their praticality or effectiveness.

The best thing you can do to avoid injuries like this is to make sure there is plenty of soft snow to cushion your landing, although this is a luxury we would all like to have!

A helmet will protect your head if you fall, and is most useful to avoid scratches when going through areas of trees with low branches. I am not aware of how effective helmets are for protecting against serious impact.

Alot of knee injuries! there is alot of lateral motion involved in boarding, and that can lead to ACL, and MCL injuries in the knees. You also should watch your elbows and ribs, (which could get mashed together during a sideways fall) and your head. Be sure you wear a helmet that has proper cushioning!

    Wrist, arm, and back.

When you fall take it like a football player does when hitting someone. Your weak little arms probably won't be able to slow your body down all that much.

I have been snowboarding now for about 13 years. I have broken my left clavicle and my two lower right ribs, separated my left shoulder and dislocated my right shoulder. All those injuries were due to tricks. I don't remember the last time I hurt myself just riding down the hill.

When you are learning you will hurt your bum and your wrists a lot. My wrists were so banged up when I was learning I couldn't lift a pencil to write!

Many years ago, I was part of the Canadian Ski Patrol. I have seen quite a few injuries. I would NOT recommend wrist guards! The amount of force you can accumulate snowboarding is enough to snap your radius and ulna if you are wearing a wrist guard. If you are just learning, don't worry about it. You won't be falling very often after your first year.

So to make a long story short; if you want to avoid injuries, stay out of the snowboard park. I ALWAYS ride with a helmet, and if I am in the park I wear a mouth guard to prevent loosing teeth and getting concussions. And trust me, if there is one thing you want to protect, it's your noggin. That's the one thing that you can't really fix.

when falling forwards (toe side) fall closed fisted hands up in front of your chest (like a boxer) break your fall with your forearm and elbow flex. backward (heel side) again closed fisted arms down and back, but landing on your butt is problably safer than trying to break your fall, other good advice stated above, soft snow, helmet, wrist gaurd. Last but not least take lessons your skill level will rise faster and safer increasing the fun factor

DEFINITELY CONCUSSIONS, WRISTS, NECKS, BACK AND ANKLE.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LET YOUR WRISTS BEND WHEN YOU FALL AND DON'T LET YOUR BOARD SPIN BACKWARDS

    1. Sprains, broken bones and what a friend of mine refers to as "George Of The Jungle" syndrome (he didn't see the tree branch).
    2. Stay off snowboards.
