I prefer realistic art. I find it very difficult to relate to abstract art. Turner is about as abstract as I can handle. My visit to Pompidou Centre, Paris, was a huge disappointment. I couldn't make sense of anything. Wish I could find a good on-line guide to understanding and appreciating abstract art.

I wouldn't make a distinction between abstract art and figurative art. Great paintings have elements of both in them. You can see a Mondrian (or a Rothko) painting as a reduction of a landscape, for instance. I think there are great paintings which are called figurative as well as there are great paintings that are called abstract. (There are bad paintings in both veins, too, of course.)
