He died along with the Big bopper and Buddy Holly. Richie was 17.

I believe he suffered a serious case of death.

I have read the decriptions and autopsy reports on Holly and Valens and they are a bit graphic. I don't think I would post them here. Lets just say the injuries were VERY traumatic and rather gruesome.

If you go to Google and look up his death certificate, it tells you his injuries at the bottom of the page. His face was smashed in and badly deformed, with cuts and bruises to his arms and legs, from what I remember.

from what I read all three of these young men were horribly mangled from the crash.

2 broken arms, internal injuries unknown, his head was torn open and brain matter spilled out. the left side of his face was flattened and crushed . none of his features were identifiable. note: what did survive the crash intact was a bracelet he had on his person that simply said "DONNA"...a bit sad isnt it?

ritchie had his arms broken, his right side of the face was chrused, his head was split. they had to identify him by his finger prints oh he was found 17 feet away from the plane. holly's body was also found 17 feet away with pretty much the same injuries.. bopper was found 40 feet away from the plane with almost the same injuries. the pilot was stuck in the plane with his feet up in the air when they found the plane know he had all his ribs broken plus some bones and various scratches.. by the way all the bodies were partly frozen due to the weather and due to the fact they weren't found til 9 am the next morrning so they had been frozen for about 10 hours
