Why are most superhero constumes so tight? Wouldn't they cause some serious chafing?

It just proves how tough they are. After all, if bullets bounce off your eyeball, a bit of lycra isn't going to be a problem.

To show off their physique without offending the sensibilities of the era they came from by showing off too much skin. It harkens back to the circus strongmen from days of old.

Being a "well endowed" superhero myself we wear them so tight to show off certain areas to certain female villians and super heroes. I mean have you seen Catwoman and Elektra. Northstar wore them because he thought they were pretty.(If you don't get that you don't know much about comic book superheroes.)
