I don't mind the ads down the sides, but hate the ones in the middle of the answers. Badges are pretty cool. On my computer (using firefox) there is an ugly blue border round the "add an answer" and "add comment on this answer".

Yeah, I don't see what's different except for the badges and them putting ads in the middle of the page. I'd appreciate some staff input here, what exactly did you do?
