  • About the same as I think about people who buy themselves a pencil and a pad of paper and call themselves writers. The proof is in the results, not in the tools.
  • I don't think you need a degree or a certificate to be an artist, you just have to be good enough to face the competition.
  • For as long as what they're doing doesn't affect me - and it doesn't - I couldn't care less
  • There are many people who work for companies who make signs for businesses who are trained on the job. If you are skilled on running a computer and are creative, you can work as a graphic artist. I know some people who do this this job while going to school.
  • Formal training is not necessary, but some training is very necessary. I am fine with a person calling themselves a graphic artist if they are creative and know how to do the work. Many don't. And those I feel embarresed for. Everyday I get 'designs' that the artist is so proud of, but the design is not good and it has to be entirely reworked to be printable. I have to leave it looking the same, but I have to deconstuct it and put it back together to make it trap colors, bleed correctly, register, be the correct color format (cmyk or rgb), be the right dpi or file type,... This can add incredible cost to a job, and makes me groan when I see these nice but clueless people walk in the door.
  • If they produce great work, then they can by all means call themselves a graphic designer. If they call themselves that just for posessing the software, then they've got some learning to do. All graphic designers have to start somewhere.
