I would disagree. Most people treat their pets like human family members to a large degree. Empty nesters often treat their pets like the kids that just left.

Well, ethically we should treat all living creatures with kindness but psychologically pets shouldn't be treated as humans. I've been watching the Dog Whisperer alot, and he always says the worst thing we can do to a dog is treat it like it's a human. They are happier and more well-adjusted if treated as other dogs treat them, not as humans treat each other. As far as cats are concerned, I don't think they care what we do as long as we feed them and clean out their boxes lol.
