  • I'm sure the basic concept of belonging to a group which supports one in the spirit of "brotherhood" is fine indeed. The thought of being accepted or rejected from "the group" is more pervasive among human beings than is consciously acknowledged. Read The Horse Whisperer or anything you can find by Monty Roberts. I wasn't a joiner in college because I found some of the people (not the organizations) too abusive and insensitive to other human beings. I remember one guy (poor, trusting, fool) who allowed one of his "big brothers" to cut off one of his nipples with a pair of wire cutters. That's been more than 20 years ago and the memory still disturbs me. It will probably ALWAYS disturb me.
