How long/how many miles has it been since you greased it?
-
That was happening on my car, and I thought I had to change the brakes, when I took the wheel off it was the cushing pin that came undone and was rattling/grinding in it. Put it back and it completely stopped.

Certainly sounds like your brake pads are down to the metal. The grinding sound you hear is the pad rubbing against your rotor.

it might be that your break pads are worn. if this is so, get them replaced asap.

Didn't say what kind of car you have or thee year. If you hear grinding while no brake applied if you have drums on rear, could have a piece of the hardware kit loose or lot of brake dust that cant get out until you pull the drum off. If you have rotor on rear then may have a warped rotor. noise goes away when brake applied due to caliper pressure

Thats your brake pads worn down to the metal get them replaced pronto!
