Billie Holiday because “the Lady sings the blues”.
-
why no both? :(
-
Ella Fitzgerald, I like her powerful and uplifting, energetic songs (e.g. Fire).
-
Billie Holiday, just like her style more, but Ella is good, no doubt.
-
Ella Fitzgerald, she's got crazy scat singing.
-
I like both but if I had to choose it would be Ella Fitzgerald.
-
Billie Holiday. I like both but Billie Holiday has that "reach inside your soul" thing going on- there's something completely heartbreaking about the way she sings. "Good Morning Heartache" is one of my favorite "wallowing" songs.

Oooo TOUGH one, Anonymous! It's apples and oranges. Ella was a GIFTED musician/vocalist. I still sit at her feet for wisdom. Billie's tortured insides ARE the sound you hear in her voice. She bypasses the intellect and goes straight to the soul of her listeners.
-
Both are good, but I would have to go with Billie Holiday. I own several of her cd's.
-
Billie Holiday of course!!!
-
I hope I never have to choose in real life. I will put Ella first, but only if I do not have to give up Billie.
-
Billie, no doubt, no f@#$%$% doubt Billie it was in some book the man who played for her once said that when you hear ella sing the song traveling light and words go my man has gone, you imagine a man who goes downstairs to the store to buy milk and stuff, and then when billie sings the very same words you see that man who packed things and everything and going for reall leaving never to return while ella is all style and nothing more vitaliy

An amateurs' point of view: Billie has so much of her person in her music. Of course, Ella is one of the greats--but she's a little too commercial for me. Ella was like an old man with no scars, wrinkles or grey hair. Somehow her life was very separate from the music she sang. I'm open to dispute if you feel up to it. And I'm no more than an audience. No musical talent at all.
