Initially, these stores were open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., hours unprecedented in their length, hence the name. The company began to use the 7-Eleven name in 1946. By 1952, 7-Eleven opened its 100th store.

At that time, to be open from "7 to 11" was considered out of the ordinary! Most businesses closed at 5 PM, and weren't open on weekends. That's why the 7-11 became such a popular store. It was also "different" because of the types of items sold, and it meant not having to go to the grocery store for a few items. Then someone realized a further opportunity and made the "convenience" store a 24 hr. thing.
