Fender is better.

I suppose it is possible to get a Fender that is a lemon, just like it is possible to get a Chevy,Dodge or Ford that is a lemon, but overall, I would say Fender is probably better quality than a Yamaha. I had a Yamaha acoustic and it was a really good sounding instrument, but the Fender my friend has is better on the action and sounds better than my Yamaha did. Besides, when I see Fender I think of guitars. When I see Yamaha, I think of a second rate motorscooter. Just me.

I think Fender is much better. Good purchase if your getting one.

It depends on the woods used for the guitar. Solid top means that the front of the guitar, where the soundhole is,is one thin piece of wood. this is better quality than a laminated top, which is basically plywood. solid spruce tops are good.

Well, It depends - They are both good brands, and It also depends on the guitar you're buying. For example, if you buy the low-range fender, its not going to be as good as a mid-range Yamaha. Really, if you treat them right, the guitar will treat you well - My Guitar is a $149 (In aussie dollars, of course) semi-acoustic from An Aldi Supermarket - and it sounds absolutely wonderful - every bit as good as my father's Twelve string Fender Acoustic.

I like my Yamaha 12-string very much. I have not played a Yamaha 6-string. My Yamaha classical guitar, from the 1970's, is also quite well made with good sound. I don't think Fender makes Classical Guitars and I have not played any 12-string acoustic Fenders, but their 6-strings are pretty good. Not up there with the top of the line Gibsons and Martins, but good.

Personally I like the Yamaha (as long as your not comparing apple to oranges models). I prefer a Gibson or a Taylor myself.

It's the player of the guitar that will make the difference.

In order to determine quality between these manufacturers you will have to limit the comparison to instruments within the same price range and build for a specific purpose. Both companies make instruments to be played with steel strings and to be played only with nylon strings (classical guitars). Both companies have a very good reputation within the guitar-playing community. So in the final analysis you will have to play the instruments within the same price-range and musical style for which it was made and make your own decision.Only you can determine which instrument fits your particular choices in "sound"and "playability" of the instrument. Note:Even within the same manufacturer two identical instruments in the same price category may have some differences in "feeling" and "sound" to a prospective buyer.Try both manufacturer guitars first and then decide for yourself.

Model-for-model and price-for-price, I would say that Yamaha is better. They are both good guitars, and in many cases the quality is similar and too close to pick a favorite. You would be happy with either one.
