  • Vegemite is a black spread that tastes very salty if too much is consumed, however it tastes great if you have it on lightly toasted bread with heaps of butter. NOT TO BE EATEN OUT OF THE JAR!!! I'm not sure if it is available in the U.S. sorry :(
  • We like peanut butter in Australia and vegemite is our national spread (you're not Aussie if you don't like it!) - but - it is not available in the US at this time due to FDA laws banning it due to its folate content. Folate has not been added to vegemite but is in it as a B vitamin, vegemite is high in b vitamins. Vegemite is a yeast spread that is made from the yeast leftovers of beer brewing. The yeast gives it its high vitamin content. Probably only comparable to marmite (a UK yeast spread).
  • I know this means that I am not Australian but Vegemite is like used motor oil. I heard once it was used to lubricate tanks and jeeps in world war two. (The lubrication thing could be 100% false, but its fun to believe.)
  • love it love it love it! it's the best. most australians have it as babies so they are used to it. i would say most of us aussies like it, there are people here who don't use it. i travelled through the states quite regually for a few years and always took the vegemite! it is an aquired taste and most americans who where brave enough to get passed the strong smell and try it, didn't like it.
  • Vegemite (originaly from New Zealand - just another thing those bloody Aussies pinched from us!) is, as the other answers have correctly stated, a yeast extract, and, again as correctly stated, is not availalbe in the US. However, it's cousin, Marmite, is available in the US. The 2 are basically the same product but have different tastes as any yeast-extract-phobic would soon tell you. Some swear by Vegemite, some by Marmite. The latter is a UK product.
  • Yes Tris bloody aussies. didnt you americans hear, it was banned over there for using a chemical or product that can only be used in wheats.
  • Well, first of all, it's not just in Australia. We've always eaten it in New Zealand too. There's Vegemite and Marmite both pretty similar. I think it is available in the US at international stores.
  • Yum Yum!! My mate,Marmite!!!
  • i once was told that vegemite is the PB&J of australia. but in america it costs about $8 for a tiny jar. no wonder none of them eat it!
  • Oh yeah, in primary school we all used to call them 'Penis Butter' and 'Vaginamite'. OMG SO FUNNY! Ha!Ha! LOL :^D
  • lotsa of americans hate the taste of vegemite, its sort of a salty yeast taste, and is quite expensive overseas! a think black spread similar to the texture of smooth peanut butter

  • There is no equivalent in the States , In England marmite is pretty much the same thing. It is like a spread you put on toast. It is salty and nasty. They advertise its English equivelant Marmite "You either love it or hate it"" with a guy vomiting after kissing a girl who has been eating it. Must tell you something
  • it might be expensive in the US, but it's worth it. It takes ages to go through a small jar anyway - you'll probably have gone through the same value in peanut butter two or three times over, by the time its finished. It's only meant to be used sparingly, unless you're well used to it. I can eat it straight out of the jar. :) good stuff! Vegemite is a lot thicker than peanut butter, really dark brown, very salty and a bit smelly(in a good way) but i don't really know what I'd compare it to.
  • http://www.AussieFoodShop.com is your best bet for vegemite
  • It's a paste that Aussies and only Aussies spread on their toast and bread...I believe it's made from a yeast extract....and it's disgusting...lol
  • Basically just highly condensed vegetable stock. The liquid from boiling vegetables, with a bit of spices, boiled until nearly all the water has gone.
  • Vegetable oils/gums and salt.
  • It is what Alec and Paw43 have said.. with the added information that it is a poor Marmite rip off.
  • Vegemite is SOooooooo yummy ! :) ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite http://www.vegemite.com.au/vegemite/page?siteid=vegemite-prd&locale=auen1&PagecRef=757
  • THIS Canadian consider the looks as something that is similar to what babies produce a lot of.
