Depends what country you are in. It seems very common to tip in the US but in Australia and NZ it is unusual except in circumstances that a particular staff member may have gone the extra mile. You might tip the Conceirge or the porter for bringing your bags up to your room - maybe $5 if you have an ordinary quantity! A waiter in the restaurant might also get a tip - in the US perhaps equal to 10%. If you feel the housemaid has done a good job of tidying your room again maybe leave a tip on the beside table - I ofter leave a pile of loose change but of some value especially if I am in a foreign country and the change is of no use to me (I always end up with another pile by the time I get to the airport anyway!). In a nutshell - it's up to you to reward for good service in my opinion - not for you to pay the staff their salary - that's their employers role. Happy travels!

If I just stay the night I don't tip anyone. If I am staying several days I tip the maid. I can open my own doors and carry my own luggage.
