It isn't what you take/make..it is what you give. Do we give what we can/should/ought to or do we leave that to others?
I try to give, but Lord knows that there's always room for more giving. Giving money can be very difficult these days, but there are other ways to give too... our time, our energy, our effort, our encouragement, our love, etc.

There are those who quit because continuing to pursue the matter would get them nowhere, and then there are quitters. It's the quitters I'm not too fond of.

Can average with flashes of occasional brilliance provide a good life? Or do you need to be above-average 24/7 to succeed?
What is average? And what is success? It's all subjective.
It depends on the situation, too. Obviously if you're trying to do something like cure cancer, then you'd need to be above what most people would call "average" most of the time. However, if success to you is having a house and food, then I'd say what most people call "average" is perfectly fine.

Why is it such a horrible thing for the government to point out what is healthy and what is not, foodwise? Is it a sin to give out info?
Giving out info to ensure that its citizens are informed is fine, but I don't want my government assuming that I am not capable of making healthy decisions, and, quite frankly, the government has no business being at my dinner table.

What do you think of my permitting Lady Caitherine to join this site and comment on and ask questions?
She is an adult, and most adults can be trusted to make their own choices and live with the consequences. There is probably not much that she hasn't already been exposed to at some point in her life. It is also easy (for the most part) to avoid the more risqué content on this site. Let her have some freedom!
Also, we love welcoming others into our AB family! :)

Relationships should be trouble-free. When you have to struggle or "work hard" to maintain a relationship, isn't something wrong?
Have you had one single relationship were there was no disagreement (no matter how small), no argument, no fight? Neither has anyone else. If there are major problems in a relationship, then yes, something is wrong, but if you can overcome those problems it makes relationships all the stronger.

It's killing innocent babies. A baby (no matter how young or developed) is still a life; it's a miracle, a beautiful gift from God. Should funerals celebrate the deceased persons life?
Yes, they should (also should serve as a time for comforting, though). To mourn a person's passing serves no purpose (even though it is hard not to mourn); it's just us feeling sorry for ourselves that we don't have that person anymore. It's better to remember that life - to celebrate it and life in general.

According to some there is no right/wrong...good/bad...luck of any kind...sad/happy...kind/mean. So if they don't exist at all, what does?
what exists? Well, if there is no right or wrong, there's no truth, so we can't answer that, can we? If I insist there is a tree right in front of me, and you insist there isn't, since there would be no truth, we would both be right, even though clearly one of us would have to be right and one of us would have to be wrong. Without truth, without right and wrong, NOTHING else makes sense....

Can anyone suggest what I should get my dear wife Caitherine for her 46th birhtday? I gave her a day of pampering at a day spa 4 yrs ago...
Something's up, and the two of you need to have a heart-to-heart talk (or several). I would write her a heartfelt letter telling her how much you love her (and if need be, sincerely apologize for anything). Women love it when the one they love writes them letters (esp. handwritten). But you need to let her know that you truly do love her. Also, a little help around the house I'm guessing...

Why do some christians believe everyone is evil and no one is good, isn't that a bit of a negative way to see your fellow human?
Touchy subject, one where the truth is painful. The Bible says that none is good, no not one. So of course, if you're not good, you're evil, so basically that's what it says. We all sin (we all have a sinful), so how CAN we be good? In all honesty, you are evil, and I am just as evil. Yes, I think it's possible, although very rare, because many teens lack enough maturity (whether they are immature or not) to recognize true love, and what they think is true love really isn't. However, I do believe it's possible, especially for those few teens who are wise beyond their years.

Audio and video taping all conversations...
necessary? That way you have proof you don't lie... what do you think... will it fly?
If we don't lie, should we really feel the need to be able to defend ourselves that much? When it comes to things like that, my philosophy is people who really know me and care about me know the truth, and for those who don't, I just don't worry about it; I don't care about what they think, and as far as I'm concerned, it's their problem, not mine.

Would hatred be as vile/evil if there were never any violence attached to it? Words are just words after all, or are they?
Words can be very powerful and can change everything (I know from experience). They can build people up or tear them down until they feel like no hope is left. True, there would be no physical violence, but there would be harm to the heart, which is equally, if not more, painful. Whether or not there is violence involved, hatred is still hatred - a lack of violence does not make it any less...

Racists/bigots think just because they believe in God/Jesus they are good people and will be saved. Does God/Jesus believe in them?
If they truly believe/love/accept Jesus they will be saved and be changed. (just a side note - James 2:19 says that even demons believe in God; so merely believing does not ensure salvation - one has to accept Jesus' gift when He died on the cross. It also says that God is not willing that any should perish... so... It is possible for racists/bigots to be saved)

Hmm, this question came up in church yesterday (interesting). Personally, I think that no matter how much the devil tempts us, we are the ones who ultimately make the decision to sin or not to sin. And some of it is just our sinful nature (not Satan).

Is a sin against one not as bad as a sin against many?
Nope, it's still a sin, doesn't matter how many people one sins against. Granted, the consequences might very well be worse if you sin against many than if you just sin against one, but I wouldn't call a sin against one person any less "bad."

Be true to who you are. Don't let other people determine what you are/aren't... you'll enjoy yourself a lot more! Also work hard and try not to let the bad times get you down. Cherish the good times, learn from your mistakes. Treat everyone the way you would want to be treated in any given situation. Are tough times needed to build character or can character develop as easily in good times? Is hardship a necessary component of growth?
I think that it is possible to build character in good times as well as hard times (don't get me wrong, I do think that hard times can definitely help one grow). I think one's character is easier to see during the hard times, though. And for some people it seems like it depends. Was GOD necessitating the crucifixion of his own SON for the redemption of mankind, the ULTIMATE form of "child abuse"?
I don't think it was really the crucifixion so much as the rising from the grave (conquering death and sin) that makes redemption possible. God loves us so much that he gave us His own Son, and Jesus was just as willing to die for us because of the same love... some things in this life we have to accept without fully being able to understand it... isn't that what faith is all about?

What kind of flute would be best for a child 10 years old?
A regular concert C flute. (if you want something extremely simple, try a recorder - most people could at least play a little something on one if they tried. Well, I can be like that a lot, and I can tell you for a fact that just because someone doesn't laugh doesn't mean they enjoy it any less; they just have a different way of showing it, and whether one laughs or not sometimes just depends on what's going on at the moment.

We are told that forgiving is good for the soul. Some things are unforgiveable. So how can people forgive the unforegiveable?
Everything is forgivable - God forgives us for every wrong thing we've ever done, no matter how terrible, if we ask him to. My theory is, why should we deny others the same forgiveness that was shown to us? Yes, for us as humans it is definitely harder and can seem impossible, but with God's help we can forgive even that which does not deserve to be forgiven.

Answer to:
Why do prayers go unanswered?
Prayers are always answered. It's either yes, no, or wait awhile (or something to that effect). However, what we want isn't always God's will, so, though it might seem to us like they have gone unanswered, they really have been.
Answer to:
Christians (honest truth please): Do you pray only in times of need or is it daily? Do you make a schedule or just do it when you feel like it?
I try to pray throughout the day, but God knows we all should pray more.

Where is the common sense with religious beliefs?
"Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to"
-From "Miracle on 34th St."
I agree with this quote completely. Sometimes having faith requires you to relinquish your common sense for a time.
Answer to:
Do you know any good movie for sharing gospel? How to explain grace, sin, Jesus Christ, faith, God?
"The Last Sin Eater"
Based on the book by Francine Rivers
About a girl who is looking for redemption for a sin so terrible she almost can't live with herself for it. It's about her quest for forgiveness and redemption, and she finds the only way to that is through Christ. It's really touching and I cry every time I watch that movie, but I love it!

Answer to:
Does anyone REALLY realize that God wants a relationship and NOT religion? Religion is a way to actually keep us away from God!
I agree that God wants to have a loving relationship with us above all else.
Answer to:
When will people realize that faith is a concept that will hinder mental developement and lends to division amongst the human race?
Although the issue of faith may lead to division, faith is an amazing thing. It can be difficult to have faith (whether in people or in God), but rather, than hindering mental development, it takes great mental strength and, in the end, makes you a stronger person for it.

Well, I don't know about most other people, but it's hard for me to walk away from friends and family. My reasoning is, God doesn't give up on us, so what right to we have to give up on others? I think we should grant people the same love, forgiveness, and mercy that was shown to us.
Now, I understand that it can get very tough, and the only thing some people feel they can...

Do you have any rules for accepting friends on AB? I look first at the plus rating and then at questions/answers/comments. What things do you look at and what is the most important thing to you?
I look at their questions and answers (and if they have anything in their profile, I do that too). Usually I don't have too much of a problem accepting anyone - I just need to make sure that we don't have any major things we disagree on - I find that if we do, it's better to decline so we don't run into each other as often, and we have fewer chances of starting an argument.

Does it ever bother you that the tapestry of your life has a yet-to-be determined pattern and you won't know what it is until the end?
Sometimes I can get antsy to know how things will turn out, but most of the time I'm okay not knowing. I know God knows what will happen and that He won't throw me anything I can't handle. Knowing that makes me feel better!

What age is the minimum age you would hire a babysitter?
It depends on the character of the person and whether they have had experience with kids (siblings, little cousins, other babysitting jobs, etc.) I would say 12 or 13 for some kids, but others might not be a reliable babysitter until 18. (When I babysat, I started at age 13.)

Do we admire others because we see ourselves when we look at them or because they have attributes we wish we had but don't?
I believe that when we admire others, when we look up to them, it is because that they have qualities we lack, or those qualities are more evident in the other person. I don't think it's because we see ourselves, but maybe someone we would wish to be more like.

What to Santa, mistletoe, Yule Logs, and Christmas trees have to do with the birth of Christ?
Someone I know once compared a Christmas tree to Christ's death - to bring us enjoyment, a Christmas tree has to be cut down (therefore dying) in order to be brought into the house and decorated. Though not alive, it's still beautiful and is a pleasure to look at - we enjoy it. In the same way, Christ had to die so we can have joy - the assurance of heaven and a loving relationship...

I think it is easier to change what we think about something than how we feel. So telling someone "you shouldn't feel that way" doesn't make any sense to me. What do you think?
I agree. It's often very difficult to change how we feel, even if we know we shouldn't feel a specific way about something. I think it is possible, but it takes a lot to be able to actually do it. I don't think that changing how we feel shouldn't always be expected of us.

I think that being smarter doesn't always involve being better (although perhaps sometimes it does). It takes wisdom to become better humans, not smarts.

Answer to:
Why are we (Christians) comfortable attributing "blessings" to God, but then believing his is not the "cause" of the bad stuff that happens? Is he in control or not? I'm struggling with this.
He is not the cause. We are. It's our sin nature (and Satan) that cause bad things to happen in this world. God works even the bad stuff out for good and for His perfect will, even if we can't see it. Ultimately, God is in control!
Answer to:
Do baptist believe in the holy spirit and speaking in tongues?
Well, some don't, and some believe it was only for Bible times, but there are also those of us who believe it is a unique gift from God that should be desired (in First Corinthians). However, I've never spoken in tongues and I don't believe neither have any other Baptists I know.

What do you think about the doctrine that rock music is the devil? And how does this affect your views of Christians?
I think it's nonsense. Yes, there is rock out there that does not glorify God, but not all rock is bad. It's the lyrics of the song one needs to pay attention to, not the genre. As long as the lyrics are pleasing to God, then it's fine.

Well, it's never okay, whether before or after you're saved. And if one is truly saved, chances are they would not do things like that. However, nothing can take away your salvation. If someone did do things like that, they would need to ask for God's forgiveness.
Honestly, it's not my place to judge, but I would say that preachers who preach that should study the...

For those of you who believe in Him, whom do you think God loves more? The Hatemonger/Racist/Bigot or the person who believes in "love thy neighbor as thyself?"
God loves them all equally. My personal belief is that in His eyes, what the world classifies as "good" is the same as what we would call "bad." We all sin, and though as humans we may think that one sin is worse than another, it's all sin anyway in God's eyes. So how can He love some people more than others?

Well, there can be good and bad consequences both ways. Usually I generally somewhat trust someone until they prove that I can't or they have earned my COMPLETE trust. So, I guess I would say it's better to trust, because that's generally what I end up doing.

Can free will exist if God knows everything? For instance, if God knows what choice I am going to make before I make it, is there any chance that I could make the opposite choice...and if that is the case is it really a choice at all?
God gives people free will. He allows everyone to make their own choices, but it's like looking into the future, in a way; you do the choosing, and God happens to know which you will choose - He doesn't dictate your actions, He simply knows.

Well, you could find a more modern translation (there's plenty out there!), and it does say in the Scriptures that they were inspired by God. Also on the whole translation problem, if you trust God to help you understand what you are reading, He WILL help you understand.

When I was growing up, we had to respond to ALL questions my parents asked us with a "YES, SIR!"/"NO, SIR!" . . . . . .or. . . . . "YES, MA'AM"/"NO MA'AM!"! And if you DIDN'T, you'd, pretty much, get your hair yanked or butt spanked! How about YOURSELF?
No, but I still had to be respectful at all times, and if I didn't, I got in a load of trouble!

Does having a hard life make us harder or softer? Do we close ourselves off to the plight of others or do we open ourselves up?
I think it depends on the person and their outlook on life, as well as how much they value it. Some people allow difficult experiences to rule their lives, and they wallow in self-pity, while others take those experiences and try to make the best of them and learn from them.
Answer to:

Were you spanked as a child? If so...Was it discipline or abuse? Would you change it or do you think it did you well?
Yes to the first Q. I do not believe spanking is bad as long as it's not abuse. However, I would not want to spank my kids because as a child it only made me upset and angry at my parents (although I normally wasn't too rebellious), and I feel like the purpose behind it was lost on me because I would dwell on the actual spanking and not why it happened. I feel like some other kids...

I think that being happy is a choice we make, but being happy is easier said than done. Sometimes it's hard to be happy, and even it we're not, we should at least find something to be thankful for. Our circumstances can make it difficult to be happy, and sometimes it takes a lot to control your emotions, and some people have a harder time with it than others. So while I do think...

Obama wants longer school days and longer school years. Looks to me like schools need to start teaching during the 7 hours they have instead of teaching our kids how to chant Obama slogans! What is your take on this?
I do not like it either! Kids are kids, and they need to have some fun in their life, not more school. Yes, school is important, but there are things that matter more. I think our school system right now is just fine, and the problem is with the students not applying themselves. I think kids need more motivations to do well in school; not MORE school. I think more school would make things...

Some things really bug us, tick us off, annoy the heck out of us. Other things we let slide right off our backs. Why? Why doesn't every annoying thing/experience/person tick us off?
I think that for a lot of us, it's often the people that annoy us more, not their comments/actions/etc. Of course, we all have pet peeves and sensitive areas, too. Another thing it might be is how often it happens. Might not be too bad and first, but the more common it is, the more frustrating it becomes.

What in the world is happening to so many of our teens? Piercings, tattoos, drinking you name it.
I think a lot of it is just trying new things they've never done, and some of it is rebellion, obviously, but there are still many teens out there who are very cooperative and responsible and don't do that kind of thing. In fact, I know several teens who have more morals and scruples than some adults do.

No one has a lock on tragedy/suffering/disappointment/bad news. We all bear our burdens, lick our wounds, carry on. So why is it that some of us believe we are "victims" 24/7 and others of us keep on smiling through whatever life throws at us?
I suppose it's our attitudes and beliefs towards such things, and also how many times tragedy seems to be thrown at us. Personally, I believe we are never sent more than we can handle, and even though dark times may seem endless, we appreciate the good times more afterwards.

Sometimes when I have been in church singing and/or praying, an overwhelming sense of "sadness" comes over me with the spiritual "CONNECTION" I feel with God! My voice chokes-up and I'm nearly in TEARS! What causes that?
I would say God and your relationship with Him does. I know what you mean - I started crying in church the other week because the pastor's sermon was about feeling God's presence, and I felt so horrible and unworthy.
Anyway, it's amazing what the Lord can do and God bless you!

Both and neither. I don't want to get in trouble with either, certainly, but I do it because it's the right thing to do, and that's what God asks of us.

Sometimes the answers I get from AB members to my questions delight me. They are very thoughtful and give me insight into things I hadn't even considered. How often are you delighted with the responses you receive to your questions?
Yes, a lot of the time I am thrilled at the answers I get (when I DO actually ask serious questions). There are so many angles to each question, and I love just looking at the answers. Another thing I like is to see heartfelt yet upbeat questions, like this one, that can just make your day. Thanks Rosie!

We don't tip where I'm from, and the practice confuses me a little... How much are you supposed to tip someone? Is there a set amount? Is it mandatory? What happens if you don't tip?
Usually 10-20%, with 15 being average. No, it's not mandatory, and no one will come after you if you don't tip, but it's polite and the person who would be receiving the tip might get a little upset if you don't.

Does it "bother" you when an ABer begins their question with "OK?" For some reason, it "irks" me a tiny bit, and I don't know exactly why. [The link right below this question gives just one example.]
As long as I can make out what the question is, I usually don't have a problem with how it's worded. I just don't like questions that are insulting, inappropriate, or questions that go around bashing certain groups of people or making fun of another's beliefs. (Sorry, I guess a simple "no" would have sufficed.)

What is your most embarassing swimming pool moment?
Two times...
Once when I was a kid I fell off of the pool noodle I was using and was surprised/shocked and called for help without thinking, lifeguard came and saved me...
Other time I got out and my feet slipped right out from under me, and I landed on my back and just layed there for a moment. And at least 5 other people that I know saw it. Luckily, I'm able to laugh about that.

If the Bible says, Thou shall not judge, why do I always get Christians hating on me?
Unfortunately, many people who claim to be Christians are like that. If they are, I would say they are not a true Christian or they are very disconnected with God at the moment (but in all honesty, it's not my place to judge, as you have pointed out - it's God's). A Christian should have a loving heart, just like the Lord. And keep in mind, Christians are just like everyone...

God: Who should I trust to learn about Him and why (Goal=Heaven OK)?
Find a Bible-believing church. A sure sign that a church is Bible-believing is that they teach that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Normally we couldn't get into heaven because we're all sinners. But God sent His Son, Jesus, to die for us. He was perfect and therefore was the perfect sacrifice. His dying on the cross for our sins is, believe it or not, God's way of loving...

We are trying to check my daughter's work. The question is (9/3) *3+(6*8)/2*4-3. We got several answers. What ccan you tell me about the order of operations (PEMDAS)? Thanks!~
Parenthesis
Exponents
multiplication/division
addition/subtraction.
That is the order in which you do it. A good way to remember this is "Please excuse my dear aunt Sally"
Do nine divided by 3 which is 3, times 3 is 9. Remember that.
Then do 6 times 8, which is 48, divide by 2 which is 24, and multiply by 4, which is 96. Remember that.
Now go addition and subtraction...

Depends on who you're with and where you're at. My viewpoint is if you're at home or with someone you know very well, as long as no one minds, it's ok as long as you keep your elbows to yourself and aren't taking up the whole table. Otherwise, it might be wise to at least consider keeping them off.

Tons! How many in your family, their names and ages, any pets? play sports? an instrument? who are your friends and what do you like to do with them? What don't you like? Talk about your favorite food, where you live, what you do on your spare time.
