This happens to me too. Communication of all forms has just become so imformal. It makes me kind of annoyed. We have train tracks about 1/2 mile from our home. The sounds of the trains do not bother me, somehow I somewhat like them as they pass occasionally. Can you hear trains from where you live? Yes. I am only a few blocks away from the train station. I can hear them more during the winter. There are enough trees in my neighborhood that the noise is sort of lost during the spring/summer. Its far enough away that it doesnt't really bother me. We used to live with them literally in our back yard... it was so annoying but its amazing how often you don't notice.
