Economic disintegration, but only because global war on the level of WW1 or 2 is inconceivable unless by a mistake (Russia thinks we launched nukes at them) we have a nuclear war.
The US might clash with China over Taiwan in 15 or more years if they want to distract their people from falling living standards, but that'd be pretty localized.

If they haven't known each other very long, it probably just took a little while to learn whether they had much in common.

What do you see the world looking like in the year 2100?
IMHO conditions will get a lot worse over large parts of the globe from rising overpopulation in the poorest areas, rising temperatures (even 4 degree rises have historically had big consequences), water shortages, desertification and deforestation, extreme weather, and depletion of resources like fisheries (already virtually gone in some areas) and easily-accessible oil.

Hell yes. It's also incredibly stupid from a safety perspective (alcohol poisoning, accidents when drunk, date rape). I think that you're very immature and have extremely poor judgment to care about the opinions of peoples who you'd imagine would call you names if you don't take part in such foolish activities.

For any of you against the seal hunt in Canada, may I ask you how it's different then any other killing of animals? (Ex.: Cows, Pigs.)
Cows & pigs would kill us if they got the chance, so it's self-defense, while baby seals just come up to you trustingly for a tummy rub.
What's inaccurate about "the footage many of you see of little "cute" baby seals being clubbed to death"? That was how they killed them, to avoid damaging the fur.

Very old question. Why Japanese and Germans are fighting and they don't surrender?
Germans did surrender when the situation was hopeless, although less so against the Soviets where they knew that horrible treatment was ahead. The reasons were an extremely well-trained and well-disciplined military and years of life under the Nazis.
The Japanese culture saw fighting and dying for the Emperor as honorable, and surrender as the ultimate in dishonor, in a society in which honor...

I went to church recently and the preacher spoke about God being a just or fair God. If you believe in God do you agree with this statement being true or false? In my opinion I can't say I agree when I look at how my life is and how the world is as well.
True, I don't believe that God is going to arbitrarily decide to smite us or judge us unfairly.
But, even more, I don't believe that God is going to *judge* us at all, so there's not even an opportunity for unfairness.

We went to Disney World in October. Buy guidebooks to identify which rides are the most popular, and get the top 3 or 4 done first, and after that it's gravy. My 6-yo son found the Lilo & Stitch "ride" terrifying, which, in retrospect, the guide book warned about.

I've been places with my then-young kids and various moms there with their kids treated me like I was invisible. I'm not THAT creepy-looking - it's just like they thought that I was going to proposition them if they made eye contact. I know, historically, guys have treated women as invisible in many situations, eg, business.

Why did the left swallow the Communist press hook line and sinker during the Cold War,but didn't trust the free press in the West.
A minority of authors and public figures, more so than the media I think, were apologists for Stalin well after that was inexcusable. But that fell well out of favor by the 70s, IMO. Do you have specific cases you're thinking of and I'm not?

Is there a part of the US that you would prefer to never visit? And if so, why?
Most of the country is just boring carbon-copy cities and suburbs and country with next to no history or style, so I have no real desire to visit most places. But among places that some people might actually want to go, I'd say the Disney parks, which is too bad for me because me & the wife & kids spent 3 days in Orlando last October. And almost any place where the tourist attractions...

Why's it illegal to keep ferrets as pets in some places?
Another reason might be that they're not typical pets, and people can get nervous about them. (There was a case less than a year ago locally where a pet ferret was left alone with a baby while the parents were out and chewed off all but 2 or 3 of its fingers.) I don't know if, proportionally, they're any more dangerous than dogs, who of course can also attack kids.

Why are American police sedan vehicles equipped with two shotguns? Don't officers already carry small firearms so why the shotguns?
It obviously depends on the jurisdiction. In the fairly well-off Kansas City suburb that I used to work for, there was only one cop per car, so they didn't need 2. In bad pars of big cities, there are probably often or usually 2 cops per car, and it's better to have it and probably never use it, than to need it and not have it. Unfortunately we live in a violent society by Western standards.

Is religion a kind of mental disease?
"I am talking about a religion, which cause wars and death." - Governments and religion and individuals will use any excuse to fear, to hate, to strike out, to follow leaders rather than think for themselves. It's just what people do. If it weren't for religion, it'd be some other ethnic or ideological reason, e.g., Hutus vs Tutsis or Commies vs the West.

Can you imadgine living the lives that your grandparents lived? What would be the things that you missed the most?
Central heating is nice. My parents grew up in a small coal-mining town in Pennsylvania, with one coal-burning stove per house. But mostly, modern medicine. I don't know if they had the meds back then to replace a dying thyroid gland (suspect not), but that probably would have meant that at age 45 I'd have wound down and been unable to stay awake and lost my coal-mining job and contracted...

Effing the ineffable - how can anyone describe the ineffable God ?
In England and English-settled countries, "effing" is a slightly less offensive way to say the obscenity "f***ing"... I know you didn't mean it that way.
Anyway... we can describe it only poorly; best, perhaps, by poetical language like Rumi's.

Agree or disagree - Without religion, there would be no ultimate meaning to life?
I see "religion" as the rules developed by a given sect, so in that sense, no.
If you mean "religion" more like "attention to God", then not exactly as you said it, but rather, you have missed what can give life meaning.

Of all the people in your life, who was the most influential in helping you to form your life path and why?
I had a very hands-off childhood; Dad was an old-school provider who traveled a lot and Mom was probably tired after 5 kids and wasn't of the generation in which parents tried to be their kids' friends. My sibs were older. I never had talks or advice about my life path. Really, any motivation came from within, although I believe that that is my natural attitude rather than me being taught it...

Who was the greatest Sufi in your individual point of view and why?
No one is the "greatest"; we are all nothing, in a sense. As a medieval Christian mystic said,
My soul then said "I have nothing, for I am utterly stripped and naked; I can do nothing for I have no manner of power, but am as water poured out; I am nothing, for all that I am is no more than an image of Being, and only God is my I AM."
Which Sufi best expressed that? We only know of a few...
Answer to:
This question is for Non muslims only:
What do you like or dislike about Sufism?
What do you like or dislike about your own religion?
It's less rules-based, and more directed towards realizing one's Oneness with God.
I go to a Unity church (which isn't Unitarianism), in which the spiritual teachings are very much along the same lines.

Why can't liberal admit anything negative about themselves? They are not perfect.
I'm a liberalish about some things, conservative-ish about others. There are wackjob libs just as there are wackjob cons, but as for "mainstream liberal" positions... eg, it's appalling and un-American for Obama to support open-ballot voting for union membership. Howzat?

What's stopping China from sweeping through the Pacific?
There's no much in the Pacific itself. Seizing US possessions would start a war.
They *are* claiming islands that are much closer to the Phillippines and Vietnam, because of the oil near them.
The only conflict I can see as possible is if there's a severe economic downturn (eg, if/when NY, DC, or London gets nuked by terrorists, with resultant middle-east war), and China's leaders, to distract...

They are trying to destabilize their weak governments so that they can gain power.
The riots are just examples of mob mentality - steal and destroy what's at hand. Plus, if a group of 4 guys gets into a car and drives elsewhere to burn a building, it lacks the cover of a lot of people doing it. And if hordes of people invaded more affluent areas, they'd be met with more deadly force.

In WW2 were the German POWs as keen to escape from the prison camps as were the allies in Germany?
Few tried, and fewer got very far - how the heck would you make it from hundreds or thousands of miles from the Atlantic, TO the east coast, and then make it back to Germany? There was one POW who escaped for good and assimilated into American society until he "came out" in the 1990s.

It's nicer than a hotel room, but it's basically not sleeping in your own bed, which isn't comfy. If it's not the sole purpose of a weekend getaway and you're having lots of other fun, it might be nice. Also, I eat big breakfasts, and they tend not to have what I feel like eating, or enough of it.

What is the difference between class and object?
Kiku got it right. You define the class in code - think of it as the blueprints. Eg, a "Customer" class.
Then, when your program needs to deal with an actual customer, you "instantiate" the class (with the "new" keyword in C-like languages or VB) to create an actual object that you can work with. You can set its and access it values ("properties", eg, customer name), call its chunks o' code...

I don't believe it's fore-ordained or anything.
I once heard someone say that on some spirit level, people choose to die at a given point in time, and they were actually referring to those killed on 9/11. I don't believe that at all.
I do believe that people on their deathbeds sometimes choose to "let go", very often when their loved ones are out of the room, even when they're unconscious.

ALL religion is retarded and an illogical backward way of thought, do you agree?
No... I think you have an idea of religion that's about as sophisticated as a comic book.
Not everybody who believes in "God" believes that it's a kind of super-Zeus.
Few people are the obnoxious Bible-thumper or riot-when-a-Quran-is-burned types.
You don't know anybody else's inner experiences.

Who goes to Heaven? Likewise, who goes to Hell?
Heaven - those who choose to know God at any point in time know that they're in the Presence always.
Hell - This is a loaded term. The concept of an angry god who punishes people is horrible, and the idea of eternal torment is an abomination. But people can be in a "hellish" place in their thoughts and lives, but can choose to turn back again to know that that's not the truth about them or...

If "God" told you to sacrifice your own child, would you be willing to do it ?
[To the believers of the Abrahamic religions]
I'm actually pretty sensible, so I'm pretty sure that even if I really thought it was God talking to me, I'd say to myself "OK, I think this is God speaking to me, but it can't be because God wouldn't order me to kill my son".

Obama's team has backpedaled. No, OBL was not armed. No, he really didn't use a human shield. How long until they tell us he's not dead?
That's a pathetic reach to tear down the prez. He was not there, he did not shoot, he did not personally disseminate info about the raid. Obviously, reports of a gun battle will be confused, contradictory, and initially inaccurate. I know not to generalize from a few internet trolls, but it's hard not to classify rabid Obama-haters as poorly informed and willfully ignorant.

Since Bin Laden didn't represent Islam, why would some Muslims be upset at his death?
Depends which Muslims... people vary regardless of their religion. To the more enlightened Muslims he didn't represent Islam, but many aspects of him appealed to the more primitive-outlook ones, mostly in backward areas of the world like Afghanistan.
Many Muslims, especially ones from the Middle East where politics and ruling has meant conspiracies since time immemorial, just don't believe...

Agreed? consumption in the western countries and the continued population explosion in the poor countries will turn into catastrophes.
Yep, more quickly and catastrophically in the poor countries. The world as a whole passed the stage of renewability (its "carrying capacity") about 1985 or so, which is about 2 billion people ago, with most of the consumption coming in the West and a few developing countries like China.

Answer to:
Since God doesnt forgive until a person confesses/repents, does it mean we can withhold forgiveness from those who sin against us until...??
I believe that God does not judge in the first place, so there's nothing to forgive. All you have to do is turn back to God, and he'll come running back to you from a long way off, brush away your apologies, and let you know that all he has is yours.
If you do something that hurts yourself, you're punishing yourself.
If you do something that hurts another, you should make amends.

April 17, 2011 Can someone please tell me what the weather is like in Indiana ? I'm hearing a million different things.
The north is probably a lot like Chicago except hopefully not as gray - loooong, cold winters.
The south is closer to Kentucky, so they'd get less snow and more ice storms.
The summers throughout the Midwest can be hot, and muggy.

My husband and I have been fighting a lot... I'm kind of fed up... anyone wanna tell me if I'm wrong here?
You are absolutely not out of line... he is completely inconsiderate and very immature. If it were me, I'd have a calm talk off-site - prepare a few talking points - and if he doesn't get it then I'd make him attend marriage counseling. If he didn't do that, I'd end it. That sounds harsh, but his behavior is completely out of bounds, and he's not going to change without a severe wake-up call.

18 yards or 54 ft or 648 inches of snow this year here. How much water is in a square foot ?
1 liter is, by definition, 10 cm cubed, which is almost exactly 4" cubed. 27 of those cubes in a cubic foot, so 27 liters in a cubic foot, which is maybe a bit under 30 quarts, which is 7.5 gallons.
How much water in a cubic foot of snow...? Snow can vary a lot depending on the type.

You've had to deal with some really nasty people, and they're in the habit of putting you down, successfully so in their minds. I know very well that it's hard to not internalize that and think that there's something wrong with you. All you can do is be pleasant to them, and be firm but pleasant and stick to the facts when they're being nasty. It's probably a good idea to limit contact, and...

From our position on the Earth, in what direction did the Big Bang occur? Using the Earth's Precise Centre (core) as our position.
What ImAlec said. Regarding space "being created", think of a 2D analogy - the surface area of a balloon being inflated. The surface area has no "end" to it in the 2D sense, and there's no spot on it where the inflation began when the balloon was infinitely small and dense. As the balloon inflates, it creates more space, and every spot on the balloon is getting farther away from every other...
