    Sorry, as with every year, it depends on what you intend to do, what skills you already have, what demand there is in your area or field, etc.

    No one language will ever be "the best to learn" in general.

    I agree with HasntBeen, completely. It depends on what you want to do.

    I answered for my own personal case. I want to know procedural and OOP. I want to be close to the hardware and the user. To that end, C++ is a good start, but it's only a start, I think.

    Besides, C++ is my native language. It's the language I began with. =)

    PHP is best scripting language. It is very easy to learn if you know C programming.

    because it's last year's language, or just about.

    your options are all ancient.

    java: 1995
    javascript: 1995
    c++: 1983
    php: 1995
    c: 1972

    anyway, if you're a programmer then all of the above should be trivial to learn if you don't already know them.

    PHP only because its a web language, so add Python and possibly Ruby to the list.

    Check the Tiobe index to see whats rising and what is in decline, then see what the languages are commonly used for (there are several specialty fields). Figure out what you would like to be doing, and then pick the languages you want to learn. Languages - because knowing more than one makes you a better programmer.

    Don't forget the related languages and tools in the domain you are interested in, such as javascript and jQuery for web work, SQL for web and biz back end work, application frameworks, stuff like that.
