Hair loss is a side effect typically associated with hormone-influencing supplements such as DHEA. Ephedra, also known as ma huang, was used in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for breathing problems. As a supplement, it was usually marketed as a thermogenic ingredient in weight loss or diet pills, and acted on the body's metabolism, not its hormones.
While ephedra has not been linked to hair loss as a side effect, it does come with a host of other documented side effects including mood changes, vomiting, heart problems, seizures or death. It's also known to interact with multiple prescription medications, and could cause unpredictable side effects as a result.
Ephedra has not been reported to cause hair loss, but this doesn't disprove hair loss as a potential side effect. Finally, ephedra supplements were banned from sale in the United States as of late 2004, due to potentially deadly side effects, so it is unlikely that further study will be done.
