Many former members are now saying so - as this discussion from the Christianity Today website illustrates: http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/comments/allreviews.html?id=40794&showall=true
Here are some sample quotes:
"I'm just tired of the people that love Calvary Chapel more than Jesus Himself. CC is a cult."
"It may not be a cult, but it has a cultic personality. Someone at work the other day asked me if lack of team work was our problem; my response was that we don't have enough employees; there's no team. You can't have 'teamwork' if you don't have a team to begin with. The above mentions 'pressing on'. The real question to ask is if CC is a true church to begin with. Do they have the 3 marks that make up a biblical church? Slaving day and night under the wrong presidence is silly at best and possible sinful at worse."
"After serving as a faitfull puppy at C.C. Costa Mesa for 31 years, I confronted Chuch and Brian about the miss doings that were goings on there and I was told to not go away mad, just go away. I was told that I was touching God's anointed, well I guess Nathan was doing the same to David so I feel I'm in good company. You people out side really don't know the half of the garbage that is going on at C.C.C.M by the anointed ones. Calvary Chapel in not a denomiation, its a cult."
"After ... three churches with Calvary Chapel, I'm firmly convinced that they are a cult. You can believe that Jesus is Truth, and yet still act cult-like in how you abuse others. That is the face of CC."
"Great article. So many testimonies of such things happening in Calvary Chapels. Everytime their senior pastor gets a whim, he is free to do whatever he wants. Calvary Chapel a cult, and should be avoided."
"They force strong views to be marginalized and do the typical "we're the authorities on God" routine to the same people that escaped the CC cult. I'm sure this post will be considered for posting over there, and it will be derided thoroughly."

America gives the impression of being a very Christian nation, but then there are so many protestant factions, why?

You're reading CHRISTIANS: Is the Calvary Chapel movement a cult?
Comments
Please elaborate as to why it isn't.
And please note that a group can be doctrinally sound and Biblically orthodox yet still be a Mind Control Cult (please see the BITE Model http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/articles/BITE.htm)

The Calvery church I went to was nothing like what you described. I guess we all have different experiences and each church can differ from one another, even within the same type.

Actually I'm just asking the question and not offering any description. I live in Southern California and have had a lot of interaction with Calvary Chapel on both a first and second hand basis.
I've heard the case for both sides and both sides, IMO, make legitimate points and some illegitimate points.
I remain unconvinced and still questioning.

Over here in the one I have visited, there are only on average 8 people who go. It's a very small and loving group. They do not marginalize in this way and they do not have a speaker who forces strict rules. They welcome anyone and everyone and really, they are just people who want to meet with one another and help others in any way they can. I know this because i've seen it. But like I have already said, that is just ONE CC.
I don't believe in any of the teachings of 'main stream' church, but I don't call any of them cults. Catholic and Mormon, maybe, but not CC. :D

I think people use the term 'cult' too frequently when a church says something that people disagree with. Let's face it. We're not going to like everything the bible presents, but that doesn't mean it's not true. I've been attending Calvary Chapels for 35 years. Are all the CC churches perfect? Nope, but it has to be the least cult-like church that I have ever attended. Just a presentation of the scriptures in a manner than everyone can understand.

That's what I felt when I went there- the least cult-like church i've ever attended.
