Understanding the Differences

  • Step 1:
Motorcycle Insurance is Mandatory and NeededMotorcycle insurance is different from car insurance in that it covers various two-wheeled vehicles. This includes mopeds, high-performing sport-type motorcycles and touring bicycles. However, not all two-wheeled vehicles are covered. Some insurers do not insure modified or custom made motorcycles. The insurers that do cover modified motorcycles, generally, offer a modified special insurance plan for these two-wheeled customized vehicles, and they often, also, have special inclusions with the modified plan. Car insurance, on the other hand, covers various four-wheeled transportation vehicles driven on the roads. Discounts are provided for motorcycle insurance subscribers who belong to various motorcycle organizations. Insurance discounts are also provided for car owners who belong to various motor clubs and other organizations.

A Closer Look at Coverage

  • Step 1:
Progressive Auto InsuranceMotorcycle insurance provides insurance coverage for the motorcycle in the event the motorcycle is damaged in an accident. It also offers liability insurance to other damaged vehicles or injured parties in an accident. If an accident occurs, the insured makes a claim to the motorcycle insurance company just as he would to an auto insurance company. Some insurance companies that offer motorcycle insurance adjust the insurance premium according to how often the motorcycle is ridden saving money for the insured. Motorcycle insurance also offers coverage for a variety of accessories that are associated with riding a motorcycle such as saddlebags, helmets, leathers and backrests. With car insurance, car accessories are not covered unless they are part of the car. The insurance coverage for automobiles is, typically, comprehensive of what it would cost to repurchase or repair the damaged vehicle. No other accessories are covered separate from the vehicle itself. With car insurance, the insured can put in a claim to have the car repaired if damage occurs to the car due to weather. Generally, a deductible is required to be paid first. Weather damage to a motorcycle, however, is, generally, not covered with the exception of the motorcycle being stored properly, like in a garage, at the time the weather damage occurs. Custom parts are also covered with motorcycle insurance. However, if a motorcycle owner performs custom work on his motorcycle and damage results to the custom work done, the custom work is also not covered under the insurance policy without the insurer having knowledge of the custom work being done first. In addition, photographic proof is also a requirement before coverage can be approved. There are numerous motorcycle insurance packages. Therefore, it's important to read over the policy thoroughly to make sure that you are getting the coverage desired and needed.

Is Motorcycle Insurance Mandatory?

  • Step 1:
Motorcycle insurance is needed by anyone who rides a motorcycle or two-wheeled transportation vehicle. Regardless of whether a person rides his motorcycle often or just on the weekends, motorcycle insurance is very important to have. Although motorcycle insurance differs from car insurance in several ways, just like any other motor vehicle, the law requirement for insurance coverage is the same.
