It totally depends upon your needs. Right now graphics cards are undergoing a transition from DirectX 9 to DirectX 10. If you want to be able to play the good games coming out, you will need to have a DirectX 10 card. Otherwise a DirectX 9 card is fine. The tradeoff though is that Direct10 cards cost about twice as much.
Good DirectX9 cards: Geforce 7600-7950. Radeon X1600-1950.
Good DirectX10 cards: Geforce 8600-8800.
With all these graphics cards, there are lots of different models and the higher the number the better. They will play the same games, but the better ones will play the games with higher settings.
