I made up my own "lower carb" diet and was very successful. It was not as extreme as Atkins - but lost 44lbs over 3 months. Essentially I ate low-processed foods. It means lower carbs because it cuts out breads, pastas, cakes, cheese and a whole bunch of processed high-carb foods.
I lived on fresh veggies, lean meats, fish, nuts and low-fat dairy stuff. Had brown rice and oats when the energy levels got low. Not only lost weight but dropped cholesterol and blood pressure and got very fit.
I took that weight off 12 years ago and have kept it off now for over a decade - without having any kind of extreme, unbalanced diet plan full of shakes or no-carbs or any other such nonsense. Just fresh foods, lean meats, sensible portions 90% of the time - the other 10% is the odd guilt-free chocolate/cake/KFC day...
