The origin of the wedding ring and when it came around isn't really known

    according to: http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/history-of-wedding-ring-3552.html

"It was in 1500s that the practice was finally formalized, when Henry VIII's son wrote the book 'The Book of Common Prayer'. The book spelt English modern Protestant wedding vows and verdict on the finger on which the wedding rings should be worn. "

There are sites that say it was habit long before then. It's hard to really tell.
