If you think of a book such as Lord of the Rings by Tolkein you will see that it may be read by a child in a literal sense, just enjoying the story. But, since adults too, enjoy this book then it is possible to see the story in a more symbolic way. In this way we can learn to look for deeper or hidden meanings in works of literature. By analysing the content and actively trying to understand what the author is saying we can get more out of a novel. Not all works of fiction are written with this intention, though, so analysis of this sort is unnecessary.
