This is a bit off to the side, but it has to do with the overall gist of the question.

In order to understand each religion, it's important to get as close as you can to what the founder of that religion was trying to convey.

For example, to know Christianity, you should study Jesus's teachings and actions, rather than the interpretations, comments, beliefs and such spread by other people, even those who claim to know and understand Jesus.

I find it interesting that there's one religion which started out as no religion. The founder explicitly stated that he was not a god, not an angel and not even a saint. He only claimed to be an ordinary human being. His teachings did not address the existence or non-existence of God. He focused his teachings on the here and now, on living in this world as well as one can by increasing one's awareness.

Come to think of it, there may be more than one "religion" which started like that but through the years and as it spread, blended with local religions and superstitions until the original meaning was completely lost to some sects and blurred in others, but the specific one to which I am referring is Buddhism.

Anyway, my point is that if you study the original teachings of each religion's founder (or the best available translations) then you will be better able to decide which religion may be right for you.
