Usually, triplets look exactly alike to each other - so how can they come from two different eggs?

Triplets can either be identical (same egg) or fraternal (different eggs). It is possible for fraternal triplets to look a like even though they are from different eggs.

I remember a set of twins that I knew in high school. When I first met them I couldn't tell the difference. However, by the next year they had grown quite different from each other. One stayed rather petite, the other became sturdier (not fat at all).

This is wrong. When you have triplets, wither one egg splits into 3, you have 3 different eggs, Or you have two different eggs and one splits. Thats why you can have identical triplets. My ex was a fraternal triplet, meaning they all came from different eggs, but I also know of a set of identical triplets at my university. The most identical babies was 5 - identical quadruplets. Which means that one egg split FIVE times.
