Help answer this question below.
"The Holiday" by Stevie Smith- witty with an underbelly of sadness.
"The Bell Jar" Sylvia Plath- beautifully written and emotionally challenging
anything by Edna O'Brien- All examples of lyrical writing
"the Third Policeman" Flann O'Brien- whimsical and bizarre humour
"Midnight's Children" Salman Rushdie- magical and intriguing twist on Indian history
"The Newspaper of Claremont Street" Elizabeth Jolley- clever, well written, funny
"Time and Tide" Amitav Ghosh- a fascinating story set in the Delta region bordering Bangladesh
"Year of Wonders" Geraldine Brooks- set in England during the plague - one woman's fascinating account.
All different but interesting, funny, moving and so on. Tristram Shandy is wonderful, but not if you don't like meandering through Laurence Sterne's extraordinary thought processes.

You're reading Can you recommend a book that you absolutely loved, and think everyone should read? I'm looking for fiction, or at least very entertaining books. Please don't suggest the bible- I've already read that.
