Hell is interpreted differently in different religions. The reasons for being in hell vary also. If you mean the hell that is referred to in the Biblical book of Revelation, the version most popular in American culture, then you should know that it is described as a temporary place "of fire and brimstone" where souls go to await the Final Judgement. Aftr so many thousands of years, the souls of hell are judged and if repentant go to heaven, if not, are "cast into a dark hole" to spend eternity seprated from God. And, so, it would seem rejection of God or commission of a mortal sin would facilitate a visit. But. like I said, all religions are different. And, no one has come back from Hell to tell us if it exists or what it is.
