You can't force him to talk, but I'd ask myself about his level of commitment to you and your r/ship.
Why he couldn't talk things over with you instead? What does it matter really in the end, proving whose right or wrong if you still care for each.
Ideally it's about two people sorting stuff out together - not punishing the other person by withdrawing.
It just causes more misery and solves nothing.
Time will tell, if this was just a convenient excuse for him to end the r/ship.
