I've always wondered this myself. I also get pretty bad reactions to mosquito bites. Mine get huge and they hurt to touch; almost like I've punched where the bite is. My mother also gets the same reaction, so I wonder if it might be genetically related? Or maybe it has to do with similar sweat or blood, or something? Not sure what causes it...but I do agree that using a bug repellant with some amount of deet is the best way to keep these suckers away from those of us who react so strongly. I also wonder if your daughter might also have bad reactions to bee stings...? I would suggest taking some procaution against a potential bee sting since she'll probably be very allergic to those as well...

Oh, and as a home remedy to the itching...try making a combination of cornstarch and rubbing alcohol...it gets messy when it dries...but it's the best thing at relieving the itching!
