Why is it that when you look at a garage roof it does not seem that high off the ground but when you get up on the roof the ground looks to be further away?

    Too simple. If the roof is 8 ft high, and (for the sake of argument) your head is 5 ft. from the ground, the roof is only 3 ft. above your head. From the roof the ground would be 13 ft from your head.
