I used to work in tech support at a computer company, and a psychiatrist who specialized in treating them told me (as we were waiting the 45 minutes it took to re-install Windows 95) that there are two basic types.

If I remember correctly, one type wants to hurt children, and the other type can only develop romantic/sexual feelings for children, not adults.

We didn't get into why some want to hurt kids, but he explained in detail how the other kind, who might be an otherwise moral, kind and considerate person, can ruin a child's life.

The ones who can only develop romantic relationships with children mean the kids absolutely no harm, the last thing they would do is intentionally hurt the kid.

They actually believe that they are having a loving, healthy romantic relationship with the child, when in reality of course, a kid is not ready for sexual relationships and it can seriously mess up their head.

They either can't or won't see the harm it can do. They know society is against it but they think it's just a prejudice, like when society used to get outraged if adults of different races fell in love.

That's why they would do that to a child.

I wish I could further explain why some adults only feel sexually attracted to or romantically interested in children. Windows had completed re-installing and his computer problem was resolved, so we never got into that.

I used to consider child molesters monsters, but now I think that maybe, just maybe, some of them are people with a mental illness that makes them do monstrous things.

If that's true, I hope we find a cure for it so those people can get the cure as soon as they realize they're attracted sexually to children (and BEFORE they do any molesting) and then live normal lives.

    • Ok .. I can understand that point of view but how could they think they were having a healthy romantic relationship with the child if the child is resisting?!?! I call bullshit. If it were a case like the one years ago with the older lady teacher and the boy ... fine. That one could be that way because they both gave consent but if a child is saying no doesn't that make this insight null & void? I was molested by my step father. I remember one time he cried about what he had done. I cried everytime and it didn't seem to bother him except that one time and he said he couldn't help himself. He knew it wasn't a "relationship".
