What is the history of Lee's Summit, Missouri?

    The original name of Lee's Summit was "The Town of Strother" when it was incorporated in 1865 by founder William B. Howard, but in 1868 the city changed its name to the current name, "The Town of Lee's Summit". The "Lee's" part has an unknown origin but locals think it has to do with either Robert E. Lee from the Civil War or Dr. Pleasant Lea. Another possibility is railroad workers painting the signs wrong. "Summit" is based from the city's elevation compared to the surrounding area.
