I still think that the Greeks had the edge in the Ancient World, although the Chinese were probably the most advanced in the Middle ages.
I have heard claims that even the Medieval Chinese thought that the World was flat, although I am not sure how reliable this claim is.
The Medieval Arabs knew that the Earth was a sphere and the Medieval Chinese were in contact with the Arabs.
