Why must I wear special shoes when I bowl? Does it give some kind of advantage?

    The answer above is correct, but I thought I'd expand on it a little...

    Bowling shoes do allow you to slide on the wooden lanes. This is neccessary because of the forward momentum you have when making your approach. If you were to wear rubber-soled shoes, which tend to stick on wooden surfaces, you would probably fall over forward as you threw the ball...trust me, I have tried it.

    Because bowling shoes slide on the wood, it allows your entire body to keep moving forward, transferring your momentum to the ball while allowing you to stay upright and stable.
