What is in boxed cake mixes that make it so you only have to add eggs, water, and oil to it?

    The answers above are correct.

    But the funny thing is, when cake mixes first came out, all you had to add to them was water. They sold very poorly. It turned out that women felt like they weren't "making something for their family" when all they added was water, so the manufacturers eventually removed the ingredients you mentioned so that the women would feel like they were more involved in "making the cake."
