Many conservatives want less funding towards welfare, telling people to "get a job". But they don't want the government to spend money to save jobs, or create more jobs, either. Can anyone explain this to me?

Many conservatives do not realize how many headaches they are avoiding by keeping welfare around. It's not a sympathy act, it's an insurance policy. There are not enough economic opportunities in poor areas. If the people in these areas do not have their living subsidized, they will resort to crime just to make a living. And by crime I mean kidnapping and ransom. Go to a third world country that doesn't have welfare, see what kind of problems they have with kidnappings. Countries like Colombia and Somalia...

I think conservatives in government realize this and choose to keep welfare around for that very reason. But I can see why it looks like a slacker's program.

    • Welfare is a progressive idea and it's progressives who have always tried to make it as big as possible enslaving the people as they grow it. If someone lives in a place with no jobs and high crime, they do do what I did, MOVE.

    • That's a very noble idea, but how do you move when you don't have the money? Where do you go? Another poor neighborhood? I suppose if you had the resources to do that, then you wouldn't be on welfare in the first place.

ps Plenty of republican-controlled government administrations have left welfare alone. Remember, that money goes right back into the economy and it gets taxed all over again.

    • No, I didn't have very much money at all, plus I had two kids. I applied for jobs in the city I wanted to move to--I chose one where a friend lived with excellent schools. When I got an interview, I drove there, 6 hours each way. I stayed with my friend. When I got the job, we stayed with her for two weeks until I got paid then I found a place to live. To me, it was important to teach my children to do what you have to do, no one owes you a living.

People cross the ocean and come to the US with nothing and make it. With few exceptions, to say the government must to do it for you is an excuse. In my opinion.

    • Conservatives realize how much is enslaves people who are better than they think they are.

    • I applaud your move. It sounds like you truly are a hard working person. I can respect that. Therefore, I respect your opinion even more. However, you have surpassed my expectations for most Americans.
